Is there something right now in your business (or life, for that matter) that’s bugging you or stressing you out?
I’m guessing you can come up with something. If so…
Right now, write it down – put it in black & white.
Next, ask yourself: is the problem you’re grappling with strategic in nature (meaning you don’t know HOW to do something) or emotional in nature (meaning you’re just stuck and can’t move forward). Or both (those are the really sticky problems).
If it’s a strategic problem, usually you’ll feel:
Open to new ideas
Desire for action
If it’s emotional problem, usually you’ll feel:
A strong sense of dislike or dread (which might even manifest physically, e.g. headaches or fatigue)
Flat and un-enthused
I’ve discovered that the most challenging problems involve both the strategic and the emotional aspects, and therefore need to be approached from both angles.
Challenge: You’re not moving forward and calling clients to ask for referrals.
Strategic aspect of this challenge: Don’t know what to say, don’t have a script so of course you’re hesitant to pick up the phone.
Emotional aspect: You’re afraid you’ll bother them, they won’t want to recommend you, they don’t think well enough of you
Try these steps:
Ask for the business help you need to remove the strategic block. This part is usually pretty straightforward. Ask your coach or colleagues for advice. Get the information you need to move forward.
Handle what’s going on in your head. This can be trickier, but try the following steps (as well as use the tips in the article below):
WHAT IS THE VOICE TELLING YOU?
“You can’t do THAT!…” “That’s a bad idea…” “They’ll think I’m greedy…” (You know the voice that never shuts up).
Hint: You may need to trigger the voice with an affirmation or intention.
CAN YOU FEEL THE SENSATION IN YOUR BODY? Where? Is it your throat? chest? solar plexus? gut? What is the sensation? butterflies? a sinking feeling? heavy weight? Does the sensation have anything to tell you?
IS IT TIED TO A MEMORY? Did an event happen which gives you a negative response to taking action?
If you have a belief that’s keeping you from taking action, then the belief has at least one of the following components:
- You’re afraid that taking the action will be unpleasant.
- You’re afraid that the outcome of taking the action will be unpleasant.
- You feel that the action is not congruent with your identity. In order to move forward, you must re-frame things, which means find a new perspective to view this from.
Once you’ve identified what’s really holding you back, do hidden belief exercises to remove these fears, and then step forward with confidence and energy.
